透明質酸（HA）是一種高分子量陰離子多糖（1，000-10，000 kD），由重復的二糖組成。它是結締組織細胞外基質的幾種糖胺聚糖成分之一。 游離的透明質酸被肝臟吸收，在那里被降解和回收。許多慢性肝病，包括感染（乙型或丙型肝炎）、毒性（酒精和藥物）、遺傳（血色素沉著癥）、自身免疫和惡性腫瘤，都會導致肝臟炎癥，可進展為肝纖維化和肝硬化;導致肝功能受損，導致循環透明質酸水平迅速升高。
